The Italian dentist specializing in the beauty of women's smiles explains what his work consists of and why men and women have different dental needs.

In many countries, such as the United States of America, there have already been dentists specializing in the beauty of the female smile for some time. Although this is not yet widespread in Italy, it is good to recognize that women and men have very different needs and expectations when they go to the dentist.br>
For this reason, Dr Marco Chiellini, an Italian dentist, has decided to specialize in the beauty of ladies' smiles, studying techniques that can best provide the desired results. We asked him to tell us more

Dr Marco Chiellini, you are the founder of the only Italian dental practice dedicated to women's smiles. Can you describe what your original activity consists of?

In the year 2000 I opened my practice as a generic dental practice, treating all kind of patients, but as the years went by, I realized that my passion for the aesthetic aspects of dentistry began to be very valued, especially by women. My cosmetic treatments were more and more successful and requested and that gave me the idea of addressing my practice only to women and to their needs. Since some years ago we started using a specific protocol that allows us to create smiles in harmony with woman’s faces, which are very different from men’s one. What differentiates us from a generic dental practice is the unique approach we have with our patients: having treated many women over the years, gave us an extensive knowledge of females’ specific dental issues and of the psychological problems related to those issues that, in the end, are the reasons why women come to our practice. The interior design of our practice is purely feminine, very stylish, and elegant, making it looks more like a spa than a dental practice. What more can I say… we really understand women!

Cosmetic dentistry is in great demand in the United States, while in Italy it is still little known. However, there are more and more requests for multidisciplinary dental procedures, capable of combining functional and aesthetic aspects. In your opinion, is this a problem of cultural approach? Here in Italy patients have always been more worried about the practical aspects of dental care more than the aesthetics aspects. People usually go to the dentist only when they feel pain or if they suffer from a dental abscess. But something is changing: in fact, since I opened my practice dedicated solely to women’s smile, I have already helped dozens of women to find back their smile. In any case I believe that here in Italy, thanks to our innate sense of aesthetic, we are better than them in creating beautiful smiles. In Italy you can find beauty, elegance, and style at every corner and those are cultural and intellectual traits admired by everybody.

What role does the smile play in everyday social life? Can a pleasant smile also have an impact at work?

There is a close relation between the human brain and the mechanisms regulating the smile psychology. According to a research carried out by the University of Minnesota and published in the “Plos one” magazines, people with an aesthetically pleasing smile are, on average, considered more attractive and they are more likely taken into consideration either in social life and in business. Furthermore, when a woman wants to win back a beautiful smile, she is also trying to solve a deeper psychological distress, and that’s something that doesn’t often happen to a man. There are many reasons why a woman may have neglected her smile: many women stopped taking care of themselves after having set the family as a priority, even before their health and wellbeing. Sometimes that happened because of jealous husbands who forced them to have little social life and have led them to an oppressive life inside their house. For those women putting back in shape their smile is the first step toward a personal redemption.

What are the most frequent mistakes to avoid if you want to maintain a pleasant smile?

There are a few common mistakes we all make in our day to day life that can stop us from having and preserving a perfect smile. One of them is brushing teeth immediately after a meal. Not everybody knows that it’s better to wait at least 30 minutes after having eaten before cleaning our teeth. Right after a meal our mouth develops an acidic pH and brushing our teeth in an acidic environment could create micro erosions in the enamel; instead, waiting for 30 minutes allows our mouth to reach a base pH which is more suitable for tooth brushing. The most important things to do to preserve a perfect smile is to schedule periodical oral hygiene checks (at least twice a year or more, depending on the individual situation). I also suggest carrying out X-ray checks at least once a year, to monitor both dental and gums health. With periodical checkups it’s easier to find out any problem, even the smallest ones, and immediately treat them before they get worse.
